An Oval Pearl Necklace Provides Lots of Style
An oval pearl necklaceis made up of symmetrical pearls that are narrower at the ends than they are in the middle. These can make for beautiful pieces of jewelry. Oval pearls are well suited to both necklaces and bracelets. Depending on your personal taste, these may become your favorite shape of pearl.
The cost of these pearls is dependant on a number of factors. Like all pearls the thickness of the nacre, the amount of luster and the size are important. With these pearls though, there is not the same emphasis put on them as there is on the round pearl.
In addition to size and luster the smoothness and clarity of the surface of the pearls needs to be taken into account. The most valuable pearls will have a smooth clear finish and be free of any ridges or rings. They also will not have any blemishes.
Generally speaking, an oval pearl necklace of identical quality to a round pearl necklace will be less expensive. This is because a perfectly round sphere is the rarest of all pearl types – not because the pearl itself is of lesser quality.
One of the most famous oval pearls is the La Régente Pearl. This large, natural oval pearl was purchased in 1811 by Napoleon for his second wife Empress Marie Louise. It was mounted in her tiara. It was acquired in 1887 by Peter Carl Fabergé when most of the French Crown jewels were auctioned off. It was sold by Christie's in Geneva for $859,100 in 1988. In 2005 this same pearl was sold to a private Asian collector for $2,516,360.00. So don’t let anyone tell you that oval pearls are not valuable…
Of all the pearls produced, most pearls are freshwater pearls and today virtually all of these come from China. The most common shape of a freshwater pearl is oval. As a result most oval pearl necklaces are made up of freshwater pearls. Make sure that you buy from a quality vendor who stands behind their product.
