Mysterious Sensual Pearl Jewelery

We have been fascinated by pearl jewelery for a long time. People consider pearls to be the oldest gemstone. Natural pearls are beautiful straight out of the oyster, they do not have to be cut or polished. The best quality pearls have a brilliant luster and shiny iridescence that comes from the pearl itself. These qualities are enhanced by the natural oils found in a person’s skin.

Pearls are so naturally beautiful that they inspired wonder in the Ancients. Greek mythology proclaimed pearls to be tears of joy shed by the goddess Aphrodite. Ancient Egyptians associated pearls with Isis, the goddess of healing and life. To them pearls were so wondrous that they could only have come from the gods. The Romans were slightly more practical and restricted the wearing of pearls to the ruling class. This is a move that was later imitated in Europe.

Other cultures as well attributed mystical powers to the pearl. In India it was believed that the wearing of a pearl ring would ward off bad luck and protect its wearer in business deal. In Western culture we have the pearly gates of Heaven that we find in the Bible. The references to pearls in classic literature and great works of art are too numerous to mention. Until recent times pearls were worn almost exclusively by royalty and the very wealthy simply because no one else could afford them.

This all started to change with the advent of cultured pearls in the 1930’s. Designers like Coco Chanel embraced the pearl and by the 1950’s pearl jewelery was a staple of every well dressed woman. Now more than ever everybody can afford pearl jewelry with tremendous discounts available online. See what we mean here...

Of all the pearls on the market today, over 95% of pearls are grown and harvested. We know these as cultured. A bead is implanted in the oyster and it responds by growing layers of nacre around the bead. The more layers of nacre that grow around the bead, the more luster a pearl will have and the larger it will get. Here are some common types:

Akoya Pearls - These pearls come from the Akoya saltwater oyster, which is grown in Japan and China. The best of these pearls are graded as such and come with certificates. The very best pearls are the highest graded Akoya pearls.

Freshwater Pearls - Most freshwater pearls come from China. They are cultivated in mollusks in lakes, rivers and ponds. As the name implies they are not grown in the ocean.

Tahitian Pearls - These large colorful pearls come in unique shades of black, green, grey, purple, silver and gold. They are the product of the black-lipped oyster.
